Balgarianovinite.com Literary readings marking the 84th anniversary of Bulgarian poet Nikola Vaptsarov’s death were held on Thursday at his monument behind the National Art Gallery in Sofia. The event was organized by the Union of Bulgarian Writers (UBW), the Union of Bulgarian Journalists (UBJ) and the Bulgarian Anti-Fascist Union (BAU).
UBW Chair Boyan Angelov said that for more than ten years, the State has shown particular attention and respect for Vaptsarov and his work. As an example, he pointed to the reinstatement of the Nikola Vaptsarov International Award, which is presented once every three years to a distinguished Bulgarian or international poet.
UBJ Chair Snezhana Todorova said the anniversary evokes sorrow and reverence for Vaptsarov and his comrades, as well as hope that such crimes would not be repeated in the 21st century.
BAU President Evgeniy Beliy described Vaptsarov as “a poet, anti-fascist, humanist and a man with an unwavering belief in dignity, freedom and the future”. “His words continue to remind us of the strength of the human spirit, our responsibility before history and the need to uphold peace, justice and humanist values,” Beliy added.
The 84th anniversary of Vaptsarov’s execution was also marked with a military ceremony and the laying of wreaths and flowers at the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy in Varna. Vaptsarov has been the patron of the Naval Academy since 1949.
The anniversary was also commemorated in Blagoevgrad, where flowers were laid in front of Vaptsarov’s bas-relief on the facade of the Nikola Vaptsarov Drama Theatre.
