Balgarianovinite.com A tax audit of Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev found no violations of the law or additional tax liabilities, National Revenue Agency (NRA) Communications Director Anna Mitova said in Burgas on Saturday.
The audit covered the period between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2023, and was ordered on June 17, 2024, following instructions from the Sofia City Prosecution Office.
The inspection examined Demerdzhiev’s income and tax declarations, movable and immovable property, financial assets, company holdings, bank accounts in Bulgaria and abroad, cash holdings, loans, receivables and trips abroad.
The audit report, issued and served on September 9, 2025, found that Demerdzhiev’s income significantly exceeded his expenses, that the origin of all funds had been established and that all taxes had been duly paid, Mitova said.
Later on Saturday, Hamid Hamid MP of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms said the NRA’s statement on the audit was an attempt at “crisis PR” and alleged that Demerdzhiev had ordered the agency to “whitewash” him. Hamid called for information on the period after 2023 and for clarification regarding previously submitted alerts about Demerdzhiev’s assets.
The audit comes after Hamid said on July 22 that he had information about properties owned by companies controlled by Demerdzhiev and his wife, which he said would be submitted to the prosecution service. According to Hamid, the companies owned a total of 411 properties, including seven apartments and plots of land for construction and agriculture.
Later that day, Demerdzhiev rejected the allegations, saying he had not become wealthy from his time as an MP and that he had worked for years to acquire his assets.
