A Haitian woman who has lived in the U.S. for two decades accused President Donald Trump’s administration of committing “ethnic cleansing” by pushing to deport her and others living under Temporary Protected Status back to her home country.
Farah Larrieux complained about her looming deportation during a Saturday appearance on CNN’s First of All. Host Victor Blackwell explained the Supreme Court ruled in the Trump administration’s favor to boot Haitian and Syrian TPS recipients in June, but the date for removal has been changed several times as the decision has been appealed.
He then brought on Larrieux, whom he said is one of the Haitians facing deportation as early as next week. Blackwell asked her what she thought about the Trump administration’s claim it is safer now for Haitians to return.
“This is not policy. This is purely ethnic cleansing, it’s purely discrimination,” Larrieux said. “What the administration saying is, the life of American have more value than the life of Haitians.”
Larrieux said she has lived in the U.S. since the mid-2000s and has built a business; she said she has no idea what she will do if she is sent back to Haiti — and said it is probably not safe for her to be there.
“It’s hard to think that I will put 21 years of my life, my adulthood life, into shoe boxes and go back to Haiti, where I can be target for kidnapping, rape, I can be killed too,” she said. “It is difficult to think about it.”
She wore a red shirt during her interview which read, “All immigrants have the same rights regardless of their country of origin.”
Larrieux’s LinkedIn lists her as the co-founder and director of Thelar Management Group; the Florida company’s Facebook page has a typo in its bio, which says it is a “communication company focused on the Haitian market and specialized in creative and cultura [sic].”
And an online bio about her said:
Due to complications in her residency petition filed by her husband, Farah was granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in 2010. In 2017, she became a prominent voice in the fight for permanent residency for all TPS recipients collaborating with local and national immigration advocacy groups
Larrieux told Blackwell she gets irritated when she hears influencers and pundits who have said Haiti isn’t in too bad of shape. She said they must think Haitian TPS recipients are “stupid,” because her home country has terrible hospitals, terrible schools, and offers no economic hope.
“What kind of business can I run when [in] a country that has no infrastructure, no light?” she asked.
