Fox News host Greg Gutfeld got a brutal $787 million receipt dropped on him by CNN’s Aaron Blake as he joked about the ouster of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel over comments he made about slain activist Charlie Kirk.
The media world was shaken Wednesday night by the news that ABC has suspended Kimmel’s show “indefinitely,” just hours after he was targeted by Brendan Carr, President Donald Trump’s hand-picked FCC commissioner.
Kimmel was singled out for a comment he made during a monologue on Monday’s edition of Jimmy Kimmel Live!:
JIMMY KIMMEL: We hit some new lows over the weekend, with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it.
Gutfeld and friends celebrated the move on Wednesday night’s edition of Fox News Channel’s late-night show Gutfeld!, and the host tangled with The Atlantic’s David Frum when he invoked Gutfeld to criticize the suspension.
In a pair of posts, Frum wrote:
“How dare you call us fascists just because our appointees threaten government retaliation against broadcast networks if their comedians don’t say what we want them to say.”
Trying to imagine the reaction if the Biden administration had demanded that Fox fire Greg Gutfeld because he wasn’t sufficiently sad about the assault on Paul Pelosi
Gutfeld replied with a shot at Kimmel and at Frum’s looks, which Gutfeld suggested aren’t “appealing”:
You’re conflating intentional misinformation with opinion. Which is as dishonest as conflating David Frum with physically appealing and relevant.
That interpretation of Kimmel’s remarks is in dispute, at best.
But Gutfeld’s mention of “intentional misinformation” prompted Blake to list several
Fox News in 2023 agreed to pay $787.5 million to Dominion after it sued Fox for airing voter fraud misinformation — info that discovery showed many at the network knew to be false or baseless.
Fox settled for millions with the family of Seth Rich after it aired false conspiracy theories about his murder.
Fox also ran a number of segments featuring conspiracy theories about the Paul Pelosi attack and even joking that it might have been a gay lover’s quarrel. (i.e. Nancy “comes home to find out that her husband’s playing hide the hammer with a Black Lives Matter guy.”)
Would submit that the gov’t policing misinfo might not be a great standard for Fox.
Fox News agreed to a settlement with Dominion Voting Systems in 2023 that included a $787.5 million payout just before the suit was about to play out in a weeks-long trial after volumes of damaging revelations were publicized pre-trial.
The network settled with the family of the late Seth Rich in 2020.
Gutfeld was not a defendant in the lawsuits, but produces copious content for Fox News, which was.
