Research Vessel 421 Marks Five Years with Open Day, New Antarctic Research Plans 2026

Balgarianovinite.com The Bulgarian research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421) hosted an open day in Nessebar on Tuesday to mark five years since joining the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy and four Antarctic expeditions. Visitors toured the vessel while its officers outlined its scientific plans and growing role in international cooperation.
Retired Flotilla Admiral Boyan Mednikarov said the turnout reflected public support for the Bulgarian polar programme. He called the vessel a national cause and said it had given Bulgaria a unique scientific platform, including a new research laboratory and a broader range of projects.
Captain Nikolay Danailov, who commanded RSV 421 during its first two Antarctic expeditions, described it as an ambassador for Bulgaria’s polar cause and an instrument of military diplomacy. It was the first Bulgarian naval vessel to enter the Atlantic Ocean and cross the Equator, and its visits to Argentina, Chile and Brazil helped build ties with those countries’ navies. Danailov said future planning should include a new vessel capable of operating in both Antarctica and the Arctic.
Commander Radko Muevski said the next expedition would include a pilot study of underwater cultural heritage around the South Shetland Islands through the Bulgarian Underwater Heritage Institute. Plans also include expanding a joint study of sea currents in Bransfield Strait with the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment in Oldenburg, using a catamaran fitted with an acoustic Doppler current profiler.
RSV 421 will also support Bulgarian, Romanian and Greek research, collect water samples at various depths and make another attempt to install a seismic station in the South Shetland Islands. The vessel is due to be loaded in October and depart in early November, carrying supplies to the Bulgarian Antarctic Base St. Kliment Ohridski and supporting partner programmes.
The Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy acquired RSV 421 jointly with the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute and Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski in 2021. The vessel began its maiden Antarctic voyage on December 27, 2022, as part of the 31st Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition. BTA has operated a National Press Club aboard RSV 421 since 2022 and another at the Bulgarian Antarctic base on Livingston Island since February 2024.
