Balgarianovinite.com Tsoncho Ganev MP of Vazrazhdane called on National Assembly Chair Mihaela Dotsova to urgently convene a meeting of Parliament’s Deputy Chairpersons and the Floor Leaders with the participation of the State Agency for National Security, the State Intelligence Agency and the Defence Intelligence Service following Thursday’s phone conversation between the foreign ministers of Bulgaria and Iran.
Ganev said in Parliament that Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry had officially published details of the conversation with Iran’s foreign minister, but had released only Minister Velislava Petrova’s statements and not those published by the Iranian side.
“Iran has declared Bulgaria an aggressor; we have officially been warned that we will be attacked,” the Vazrazhdane MP said. According to him, the Iranian side said it would be appropriate for Bulgaria to reconsider its decision to deploy US military aircraft.
Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova spoke by phone with her Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, the Foreign Ministry in Sofia said on Thursday. Regarding the deployment of US tanker aircraft in Bulgaria, Petrova ruled out the possibility of any direct military action related to the conflict in the Middle East being carried out from Bulgarian territory, the Ministry said.
Petrova also said that Parliament’s decision to authorize the deployment is in line with Bulgaria’s commitments under its strategic cooperation with the United States and was adopted in accordance with the Constitution and applicable Bulgarian legislation following an official request from the US. In Petrova’s words, this does not in any way signify a change in Bulgaria’s approach towards Iran.
Meanwhile, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported that during a telephone conversation initiated by the Bulgarian side, Araghchi briefed Petrova on the latest developments in the region, what he described as the continuing US aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran, and US actions aimed at escalating tensions in West Asia.
The Iranian Foreign Minister said the Bulgarian Government’s approval of the US request to deploy military aircraft at the Bezmer Air Base for the purpose of supporting military operations is “unacceptable, and inconsistent with the longstanding friendly relations between Tehran and Sofia,” adding that the Bulgarian Government should “urgently reconsider this decision”.
Araghchi emphasized that Iran would not hesitate to defend its national interests and security against any aggression or hostile actions. He added that any party involved in a military attack against Iran will inevitably have to bear the responsibility for the consequences, IRNA reported.
