Balgarianovinite.com Almost half of Romanians believe the country should hold early parliamentary elections, according to the latest opinion poll by the Avangarde polling agency, conducted between July 22 and 27.
Romania has been governed by a caretaker administration for 86 days after Parliament passed a no-confidence motion against the government led by Liberal Party leader Ilie Bolojan on May 5. The crisis followed the withdrawal of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the largest parliamentary force, from the ruling coalition, depriving it of its majority. PSD joined forces with the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) to bring down Bolojan’s cabinet, which was then supported only by the National Liberal Party (PNL), the Save Romania Union (USR), and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania.
The poll, published on Thursday, found that 49% of respondents support holding early parliamentary elections, while 39% oppose the idea. The remaining 12% said they had no opinion or declined to answer.
Earlier in July, Adrian Tutuianu, head of Romania’s Permanent Electoral Authority, said early parliamentary elections cannot currently be organized because the country’s electoral legislation does not provide for them. He said that a draft Electoral Code will be submitted to Parliament in October, with one of its sections specifically addressing the legal framework for early elections.
Calls for snap elections have become increasingly frequent amid Romania’s prolonged political crisis. Also in July, the nationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), the country’s second-largest parliamentary party, decided to launch impeachment proceedings against President Nicusor Dan and initiate procedures aimed at organizing early parliamentary elections.
