President Donald Trump launched into an attack against Fox News after Martha MacCallum confronted him with less-than-stellar Fox polling on the economy.
Trump joined MacCallum on The Story on Thursday, where he talked up trade deals in the works and continued to insist that tariffs will lead to a major boom in the economy. MacCallum noted that Fox News polling from this month showed that 52% feel the economy is in worse shape under Trump’s administration. Another 32% believe the economy is better, and 18% do not see a change.
“We see polling that does not poll well in the economy. The recent Fox polling said 52% say the economy is worse under this administration. You’ve got unemployment at the highest rate in four years, groceries made a big jump in the last term. You’re looking forward with these plans that you just talked about. When will people feel that, President Trump?” MacCallum asked.
The president did not address unemployment or inflation directly, and instead insisted that Fox News needs new pollsters. He has long complained about negative polling, including from Fox.
“When the factories start opening. Right now we are building them and Fox polling, I have to tell you, I’ve told you before, it’s the worst polling I’ve ever had. During the election they had me winning by a little bit and not by a massive amount. And Fox polling, I’ve told Rupert Murdoch, go get yourself a new pollster because he stinks and this is for years now,” Trump said.
The president argued that bringing things like car production into the United States will lead to a manufacturing boom that he expects within a year. He further claimed that many people don’t like the word “tariff” because they “don’t understand” it. Critics have long pointed out that tariffs historically lead to the associated costs being passed off on consumers.
Trump said:
But I will say that we have all of these things being built, car companies are moving back. We lost 50%, 54% of our — we were the automobile capital and all of a sudden we got robbed by China, Japan, Germany, all of these countries. Those companies, they’re all coming back now to the United States. We’re building cars. Companies and factories all over coming back from Mexico and Canada. We lost a lot to Mexico. We lost a lot to Canada. They’re all coming back because of the tariffs. Without the tariffs, a different story, but they’re coming back because of the tariffs and you can see that kick in probably in a year or so.
