Kara Swisher tore into Page Six after the outlet questioned whether her rush to leave CNN might have something to do with her ex-girlfriend Nellie Bowles — whose wife, CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, could reportedly end up with a major role at the network.
Swisher announced Tuesday that she’s asked her agent to get her out of her CNN contract early, following Paramount Skydance’s merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN’s parent company.
“I thought, f*ck these guys. I don’t want to work for them. I just don’t,” she said on her Pivot podcast. Her contract runs through Dec. 31.
But Page Six reported Wednesday on chatter about another possible reason for Swisher’s eagerness to leave: her history with Bowles.
Bowles previously worked on Swisher’s Recode podcast, and the two dated for several years before Bowles began dating Weiss in 2018. Bowles and Weiss later married and now have two children.
Weiss, meanwhile, was installed atop CBS News by Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison and has been widely floated as a potential candidate to take on a powerful editorial role at CNN following the merger.
That prospect has fueled speculation about whether Swisher might be unenthused about potentially working under her ex’s wife.
“Kara’s just jealous,” one source told Page Six.
She emphatically rejected the suggestion after the outlet reached out for comment, though, and promptly posted a screenshot of its inquiry on Threads.
Her full message read:
The pro-power media water carriers are hard at work trying to make a lesbian cat fight happen. Here’s my comment: “As exciting as girl on girl action is for you to gin up, I have been saying for a long time now that I would depart CNN if the deal goes through, due to my lack of confidence in the owners as decent media stewards & not whatever minion they decide to install. I was spoiled by the competence and values of the Graham family early on. Please try to keep up as hard as that is for you.”
As she mentioned, Swisher has publicly threatened for months to leave CNN if the Ellisons took control, and said Tuesday that current network executives have been trying to persuade her to stay.
“I think they are terrible media owners,” Swisher said of the Ellisons. “I’d rather work for Rupert Murdoch.”
