Balgarianovinite.com Police officers of the Blagoevgrad Regional Directorate of the Interior had responded promptly to a verbal altercation between two groups of Bulgarian and Italian nationals that occurred within the jurisdiction of the Police Precinct Department in Bansko (Southwestern Bulgaria) on August 2, the Interior Ministry said on August 4.
No physical confrontation took place between the two groups, the Ministry said. Police responded immediately to a report from the security staff of the hotel in Bansko where the group of Italian youths was staying and defused tensions caused by verbal aggression from both sides.
A case file has been opened and referred to the competent prosecution office. All those involved in the incident have been identified, and police established that the Bulgarian youths were minors.
Earlier in the day, the Sofia Directorate of the Interior said it was looking into Bulgarian and foreign media reports about an act of hooliganism outside a hotel in Sofia accommodating Italian nationals. The Sofia Directorate of the Interior said that acting on its own initiative, it had launched an immediate inquiry, adding that no official report of the incident had been filed.
Authorities said they had taken “all necessary actions” to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the case and to identify all individuals who may have been involved.
The incident has been reported by all major Italian media outlets, including the Italian news agency ANSA, the newspaper Corriere della Sera, the news channel Sky TG24, the financial daily Il Sole 24 Ore, the right-wing newspaper Il Giornale, the national broadcaster Rai News, the news agency LaPresse, and others.
According their account of the incident, young neo-Nazis gathered outside the entrance to a Sofia hotel where Italian Jewish teenagers from Rome and Milan and their supervisors were staying. The group attempted to force their way into the building and then blocked access to it. Even after police intervened, they allegedly returned and once again blocked the hotel’s entrance in an incident that the Italian media have described as “a serious act of antisemitism in the heart of Europe.”
The Interior Ministry’s press office told BTA that the reports referred to a single incident that had occurred in Bansko.
