Balgarianovinite.com Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will meet his Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vucic on Saturday, Vucic’s press service reported. Topics such as European integration, economic cooperation and energy cooperation will be on the agenda.
Zelenskyy arrived in Belgrade on Friday night and had dinner with his Serbian counterpart. This is his first official visit to the Serbian capital since taking office as President of Ukraine.
In response to a reporter’s question, Zelenskyy said: “We have several important topics to discuss. One is Ukraine’s and Serbia’s path towards Europe, as we are in a similar situation and face the same or similar challenges on our European journey. I believe we will discuss how we can help one another on this matter and, if possible, learn from one another.”
The second matter is bilateral economic cooperation, and the third is energy cooperation between Serbia and Ukraine. Vucic emphasized that, apart from these, all other topics are open for discussion.
When asked whether Zelenskyy’s visit means that Serbia will join the sanctions against Russia, Vucic said that Serbia had already established its policy on sanctions almost five years ago and that this would not change until further notice.
The two presidents last spoke mid-July in Kyiv during the Ukraine–South-East Europe summit. At that time, Vucic reported that he was the only participant at the summit who had not signed the joint declaration on continued political, military and financial support for Ukraine and on stepping up pressure on Russia. The document, amongst other things, accuses Russia of illegal, unprovoked and unjustified aggression against Ukraine and calls for an immediate end to the war, as well as the complete and unconditional withdrawal of troops and military equipment from the entire territory of Ukraine.
Although it is a candidate for membership of the European Union, Serbia has not opened a single new chapter in the accession negotiations for nearly five years.
Two months after the opening of the next chapter in the accession negotiations, the war in Ukraine broke out, and Serbia failed to align its foreign policy with that of the European Union and did not impose sanctions on Russia. This was the key reason for the stalemate in the accession negotiations at that time, while the rule of law in the country deteriorated, as reported by the Serbian service of Radio Free Europe.
Ukraine’s former deputy prime minister for European and Euro-Atlantic integration Taras Kachka to whom Zelenskyy recently offered the post of head of Ukraine’s mission to the European Union, visited Belgrade in late May and discussed with Vucic the strengthening of economic cooperation and the continuation of negotiations on a free trade agreement.
A day before Kachka’s meeting with Vucic, the Serbian President spoke over the phone his Ukrainian counterpart. Following the conversation, he stated that Serbia and Ukraine are committed to improving relations through dialogue. Both countries are candidates for membership of the European Union.
