Democratic Bulgaria MP: Incident near Kardam Should Be Investigated as Potentially Targeting Critical NATO Member State Infrastructure 2026

Balgarianovinite.com Yes, Bulgaria Co-chair and Democratic Bulgaria MP Ivalyo Mirchev said in a post on Facebook in response to Prime Minister Rumen Radev’s announcement that a drone had entered Bulgarian airspace, that the incident near Kardam should be investigated as a potential incident targeting critical infrastructure in a NATO member state. “If a Russian link is established, the message will be difficult to misinterpret: intimidation, testing our response and an attempt to demonstrate that critical European infrastructure can be reached,” Mirchev said.
According to him, this would not be a show of strength, but rather a sign that the Kremlin is extending its pressure beyond the battlefield, towards countries supporting Ukraine and seeking to end Europe’s energy dependence on Russia.
“The response should not be fear. It should be greater security, stronger coordination among allies, and an even faster push to achieve energy independence for Bulgaria and the region,” he added.
Kardam is one of the key points along the Vertical Gas Corridor, a strategic project involving Bulgaria, Greece, Romania and other partners, designed to transport increasing volumes of non-Russian gas from south to north, including to Ukraine, and strengthen the region’s energy independence, Mirchev said.
Just days ago, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing new US intelligence assessments, that Vladimir Putin could seek to test NATO’s resolve through limited actions against a member state, ranging from cyberattacks to other forms of limited aggression. Days earlier, Germany became the target of what authorities have described as a hybrid attack by “foreign actors”: a drone carrying an explosive device and detonator reached Leipzig/Halle Airport, a strategic aviation hub, and was discovered near Ukrainian transport aircraft. Germany’s Federal Public Prosecution Office classified the incident as a serious attack on the country’s transport and logistics infrastructure and tasked the Federal Criminal Police Office with investigating the case. According to a US intelligence assessment cited by The Wall Street Journal today, the drone was likely linked to the Russian government, Mirchev added.
