Balgarianovinite.com The BG-ALERT system was activated to inform residents about an upcoming controlled disposal of ammunition at the EMCO plant in the village of Belitsa, Tryavna Municipality. The alert was issued by the governor of Gabrovo Region.
This is the second activation of the system. The first took place on Monday, shortly after fires broke out following an explosion at a warehouse of EMCO defence manufacturer.
According to Wednesday’s alert, the ammunition will be disposed of through controlled detonations carried out by specialized teams on the company’s premises.
The activation of the system is part of the ongoing efforts to secure the area following the incident at EMKO, where a fire broke out on August 10, followed by explosions at an ammunition storage facility.
Earlier on Wednesday, the director of the Gabrovo Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior, Senior Commissioner Iliyan Ivanov, said that the inspection of the area around the storage facility is continuing. Smouldering fires and scattered ammunition, which pose a potential danger, are still present at the site. He said the area must be cleared before investigative procedures can begin in order to ensure the safety of the teams.
Gabrovo District Prosecutor Tihomir Petkov said this morning that all possible explanations for the cause of the explosions are being investigated. According to him, a leading theory can be established once the scene has been inspected.
The controlled detonation is part of the measures being taken to secure the site and remove the dangerous ammunition left behind after the incident. Information about the upcoming operations has been communicated to the public via BG-ALERT, with the alert issued in both Bulgarian and English.
At present, the specialized teams are focused on securing the area, which is a necessary prerequisite for the subsequent inspection of the scene and investigation into the causes of the explosions.
BTA recalls that during the incident on August 10 at a storage facility of EMCO defence manufacturer near the village of Belitsa, a fire broke out, followed by explosions. After the fire was initially brought under control, smoldering hotspots and scattered ammunition remained in some areas, making it necessary to continue inspecting and securing the site.
