Balgarianovinite.com Former caretaker agriculture and food minister Ivan Hristanov said Friday on Nova TV that he will run for president in the October 25 elections. He said the vice-presidential candidate has already been chosen but will be announced when the candidacy documents are submitted.
Hristanov said his candidacy would be independent of political parties and based on a civic initiative. He described the upcoming election as an opportunity for voters to support a strong public figure and expert who can earn their trust.
He said the initiative to nominate him had started 15 months ago and had involved an organizing committee working intensively on the candidacy. Hristanov stressed that the decision was not spontaneous and argued that Bulgaria had suffered when presidential candidates had been closely associated with political parties.
The National Assembly set October 25 as the date for the presidential and vice-presidential elections at its last sitting before the parliamentary recess. Under the Constitution, if no candidate is elected in the first round, a runoff is held within seven days.
On July 24, President Iliana Iotova officially announced her candidacy for president, nominated by an initiative committee. She has received the support of the Bulgarian Socialist Party and Progressive Bulgaria.
On August 3, Daniel Valchev, dean of Sofia University’s Faculty of Law, said he would not run in the presidential election, following speculation about his possible candidacy.
In June, the Bulgarian Agrarian National Union announced Nikolay Nenchev and Tsveta Kirilova as its candidates for president and vice president.
Former caretaker prime minister Andrey Gurov, whose name has also been mentioned in connection with the presidential election, has said that a decision on whether to run should be made carefully rather than hastily.
