Foreign Ministry Says Bulgaria Uses All Communication Channels with North Macedonia over Iva Mihaylova’s Treatment 2026

Balgarianovinite.com Foreign Ministry representatives Friday met with Hristina Mihaylova, mother of Iva Mihaylova, and gave her firm assurances that Bulgaria was using all available channels of communication with the Republic of North Macedonia, the Ministry said.
The meeting followed the latest refusal by a court in Kocani to allow the young woman to leave North Macedonia to receive necessary treatment for her serious neurological condition, the Foreign Ministry said. It gave firm assurances that Bulgaria was using all available communication channels with North Macedonia to ensure that the undeniable humanitarian aspects of the case were taken into account and that Iva received the necessary treatment as soon as possible, giving her the best possible chance of recovery.
Iva Mihaylova is a citizen of both the Republic of North Macedonia and Bulgaria.
Hristina Mihaylova shared her concerns about the course of the legal proceedings and, above all, her deep concern about her daughter’s health and psychological well-being. She said the lack of adequate medical care had already caused irreversible consequences for the young woman and that any further delay posed serious risks of further deterioration. She said she continued to rely on the support of Bulgarian institutions for a favourable decision by the court of appeals in the coming days that would allow her daughter to receive the necessary treatment.
The Foreign Ministry added that the case had been raised through official diplomatic channels with the authorities of North Macedonia, with a call for a timely resolution.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Rumen Radev said the Foreign Ministry had prepared a diplomatic protest note over the case of Iva Mihaylova.
The trial against Mihaylova, who is charged with a serious offence related to road traffic safety in North Macedonia, began at the Basic Court in Kocani on July 6.
One person was killed in the incident, which occurred in early October 2025, while several people, including the defendant, were injured. Her documents were confiscated, preventing her from receiving treatment in Bulgaria, one of the countries where such treatment is possible due to the nature of her spinal injuries.
According to expert assessments commissioned by the defence, Mihaylova did not violate any rules regarding either her speed or the position of her vehicle at the time of the collision.
“Bulgaria does not interfere in the judicial proceedings of other countries, but we remain in constant contact with Mihaylova and her family. Our consul in Skopje continues to provide assistance. The State has assumed responsibility for Mihaylova’s legal defence. There are active talks at the level of the foreign ministries,” Radev said on Friday.
He thanked the members of Parliament who had brought the case to the attention of the European public, as well as President Iliana Iotova for her clear and unequivocal position. “We are not interfering, but this trial and the overall treatment of Mihaylova run counter to common sense and basic humanitarian principles,” Radev said.
