Balgarianovinite.com The Mineral Bath in Bankya, Western Bulgaria, also known as the Royal Bath or the Big Balneological Centre, was designed by the Bavarian architect Prof. Carl Hocheder (1854–1917), a leading European architect and one of Munich’s prominent designers. He is also credited with designing the Public Baths in Munich, Germany, and in Sibiu, Romania. Hocheder was assisted by architect Neno Neshev and by the the Savovi brothers, entrepreneurs from Sofia, and Nikola Rangelov from Bankya. Hocheder completed his design in 1906, and construction began the following year, with a budget of more than BGN 1 million. The official opening took place on May 24, 1911. This was the first building of its type in Bulgaria, equipped with modern technical facilities for its time.
The Mineral Bath occupies an area of approximately 1,600 sq. m. The two-storey building is rectangular in shape, with two symmetrical wings projecting towards its eastern side and connected by a spacious central lobby. The total built-up area is approximately 5,200 sq. m. Each section contains 10 baths, two of which were reserved for the royal family. The interior materials, including glass bricks, were imported from Belgium, France, and Vienna. All pools and baths were lined with Italian marble and mosaic. The cabinets, doors, and floors are made of Slavonian oak. The bathhouse in Bankya followed the Western European tradition of balneological architecture, reflecting the aristocratic cultural values of the period, and is considered a cultural monument.
Thanks to its mineral water, the town of Bankya is known as Bulgaria’s healing spot. The water is described as having analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergic properties. It is also considered beneficial for conditions affecting metabolism, the gastrointestinal tract, and the musculoskeletal and endocrine systems, as well as for general physical and mental fatigue. In addition to being used internally for therapeutic purposes, the mineral water is used externally in balneotherapy and is associated with various health benefits.
