Serbian President Urges NATO Secretary General to Protect Kosovo Serbs, Ensure Brussels Agreement Compliance 2026

Balgarianovinite.com Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic wrote a letter to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Thursday, asking the KFOR (Kosovo Force) peacekeepers to stop what he called “terror against Serbs” in Kosovo, as well as to ensure compliance with the Brussels Agreement, the TANJUG news agency reported.
“I have just sent a letter to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and asked KFOR, in accordance with UN Resolution 1244, to stop the terror against Serbs, their persecution, arrests, demolition of houses, as well as the opening of the bridge over the Ibar River, and for the international community to take steps to ensure that Pristina implements the key provisions of the 2013 Brussels Agreement,” Vucic wrote in an Instagram post.
A statement by Vucic in early August, in which he indicated that Serbian authorities were considering the possibility of diverting the waters of the Ibar River, which flows through southern Serbia and northern Kosovo, due to Pristina’s attitude towards Kosovo Serbs, caused strong reactions in Kosovo and Albania.
The Ibar River is a key part of the Ibar-Lepenc water supply system, which supplies a significant part of Kosovo with water and supports electricity production, industry and irrigation. Vucic’s statement comes against the backdrop of the demolition of structures considered illegal by Kosovo authorities near Lake Ujman – an action that has caused tensions between Kosovo and Serbia to rise in recent weeks.
In his letter to Rutte, Vucic said that over the past five years there has been a continuous persecution of the Serbian people in Kosovo “with the silence or benevolence of the international community.”
“Over the past five years, we have had over 800 ethnically motivated attacks against the Serbian population, 257 Serbs arrested, neither guilty nor responsible, and as a rule severely beaten, abused and terrorized by the so-called police services of the so-called Kosovo,” Vucic said in a video message.
Belgrade does not recognize the independence of the former Serbian province of Kosovo, which broke away from Serbia in 2008. Belgrade and Pristina have since been engaged in an EU-sponsored dialogue to normalize relations.
