Balgarianovinite.com August 20, 2026 marks 120 years since Bulgaria and Norway established diplomatic relations, the Bulgarian Embassy in Oslo reported.
The embassy added that the two countries are NATO allies and partners in the European Economic Area, with bilateral cooperation spanning a wide range of areas. The nearly 12,000-strong Bulgarian community in Norway, as well as Norwegian citizens living in Bulgaria, also serve as an important link between the two countries.
To commemorate the anniversary, the Bulgarian Embassy in Oslo has organized a series of public diplomacy initiatives throughout the year. A highlight was a documentary exhibition created jointly with the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), featuring photographs documenting key moments in Bulgarian-Norwegian relations.
The anniversary was also marked with an official celebration in Stavanger, Norway including an art workshop for children from the Bulgarian community. In Oslo, the embassy presented a permanent exhibition featuring photographs of Bulgaria’s ambassadors to Norway over the past 120 years. The documentary exhibition also highlights bilateral cooperation throughout the 20th century, as well as major political exchanges and Bulgaria’s state visit to Norway marking the centenary of diplomatic relations. It also covers the strengthening of ties following Bulgaria’s accession to NATO and the EU and the expansion of economic and cultural cooperation in recent years.
The Bulgarian Embassy in Norway also plans to publish a short brochure on the history of bilateral relations, based on materials from the exhibition.
