New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman said on Thursday that Secret Service had become “alarmed” by some of the letters President Donald Trump received from Natalie Harp.
Haberman and Jonathan Swan reported back in 2024 that Harp, 35, who currently serves as Trump’s White House executive assistant, wrote a letter to him the previous year in which she said, “You are all that matters to me.”
On Thursday night, The Daily Beast published that letter, which was being made public in full for the first time, and another letter, both from 2023. They were obtained by author Michael Wolff as he gathered material for a book on the 2024 election. The communications show Harp’s intense devotion to serving a man who would go on to be elected president a second time the following year.
“I haven’t been myself, dwelling on the Past, and the pain of losing my Dad, and I started letting the remarks of people who haven’t bothered me before, get to me—not because I care what others think, but because I see myself being lowered in your eyes and good opinion,” Harp wrote to Trump at the time. “That is the fear you see, because I never want to bring you anything but joy. I’m sorry I lost my focus. You are all that matters to me. I don’t want to ever let you down. Thank you for being my Guardian and Protector in this Life.”
Harp signed the letter, “With all my heart.”
In the second letter, Harp paraphrased Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.
“I’ll never forget when you made that promise to me after losing my Dad, and I know how happy he is right now that I did get to go to Scotland and Ireland, as he always wanted for me,” she wrote. “To modify a classic, “I could not have parted with you, to anyone less worthy”—And, I will add, it is I who is unworthy.”
Appearing on Thursday’s edition of The Source, Haberman said Harp’s letters were red flags as far as Secret Service was concerned:
Harp has carved out this role of being incredibly devoted to the president. She had left these letters for him and his personal spaces during the interregnum for four years. The Secret Service had gotten alarmed by some of them. That was not– well, that was notable. That was a campaign. That was different. She is now in the government. She sits 10 feet away from the president. She is a stream of information to him. He does rely on her. And I don’t expect that to change.
Haberman went on to say that it was “quite striking” that so many of her White House colleagues defended her after Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) said at a rally on Sunday that Trump wants to “travel with Natalie to their apparently defenseless flying palace gifted by the Emir of Qatar.”
“Most of her colleagues have been uneasy with her for some time,” Haberman said. “She is representative of how different this term is from term one, because this is the kind of aide who will just give him quick, unfiltered information, connect him to other people, is present there, and basically spends most of her waking hours trying to work for him and get him what he wants.”
