Meeting with Pasture Users Raises Awareness of Poison Baits as Crime Threatening Protected Bird Species 2026

Balgarianovinite.com A meeting in Kalofer (Central Bulgaria) on Friday aimed to raise awareness among pasture users of the threat poison baits pose to wildlife, particularly protected species like vultures and other birds of pray. The event was organized at the initiative of the Environment and Water Ministry and the Central Balkan National Park Directorate following the poisoning of eight vultures in the Park, for which a local pasture user was arrested. The use of poison baits is a crime with grave consequences for nature and humans, the participants in the meeting agreed, as reported by the Environment Ministry.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Central Balkan National Park Directorate, the National Environmental Protection Service Directorate, the Green Balkan Wildlife Rescue Centre, the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB), the National Police’s sector for combating crimes against the environment and wildlife, the Karlovo Regional Directorate of the Interior, Kalofer Municipality, Karlovo Municipality, and the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency.
The participants were briefed on the long-standing efforts to restore the populations of various vulture species in Bulgaria, which are protected under the Biodiversity Act. Various aspects of the issue were discussed, including wildlife conservation, water sources within the National Park, incidents involving predators, and damage caused by bears, as well as the daily challenges faced by farmers who use the pastures in the area.
The experts once again explained why poisoning is a significant threat to all vultures in the country, as well as to some birds of prey. The causes of vulture poisoning vary, but most often they fall victim to the illegal use of poison baits by individuals attempting to protect farm animals from ground-dwelling predators – primarily wolves, bears, jackals, and stray dogs. These scavenger birds die either by directly consuming poison bait or as a result of secondary poisoning when they feed on the prey that has ingested the poison bait.
This type of harm to protected species poses a high public risk to both wildlife and human health. Therefore, the Ministry of Environment and Water and the Central Balkan National Park Directorate categorically stated that they will continue to apply all legal mechanisms to ensure a balance between nature conservation in the protected area and the traditional, nature-friendly livelihoods of people in the Balkans.
Emphasis was placed on the need for better communication and cooperation between institutions, environmental organizations, and local farmers in order to find effective solutions that will prevent similar incidents in the future.
Dr Adriana Dzhamalova of the Green Balkans Wildlife Rescue Centre told BTA that there probably are more birds poisoned in the recent case in the Central Balkan National Park, but locating them fast is hard due to the difficult terrain.
The Centre’s head, Dr Rusko Petrov, said that each year, they conduct at least two or tree trainings to educate pupils and students on the issue. That is the only thing the Centre can do for prevention at this stage, he added. Lecturers come from Spain, nongovernmental organizations, and the Environment Ministry.
He described the situation with vultures in Bulgaria as very sad, because decades of efforts have been put into reintroducing the bearded, black, and griffon vultures in Bulgaria, only for them to fall victim to poisoning.
