149th Anniversary of Shipka Epopee to Be Marked with Official Ceremony at Shipka Peak 2026

Balgarianovinite.com The 149th anniversary of the Shipka Epopee will be marked on Saturday with an official ceremony at the foot of the Monument to Freedom on Shipka Peak, the organizers from the Gabrovo Regional Administration said. Bulgarian President and Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Iliana Iotova will attend the commemoration, inspect the guard of honour and deliver an address, the President’s press secretariat said.
Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov will also attend the commemoration, the Defence Ministry said.
Saturday’s programme begins with a memorial service at the Sokolski Monastery and the traditional hikes to Shipka Peak, organized jointly with the local Rotary Club.
Military equipment and Bulgarian Armed Forces formations will be presented in the parking area at the foot of the Monument to Freedom. Between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., the Traditsiya National Society will set up a camp featuring a military command tent, uniforms and weapons, as well as a photo area for visitors.
A musical and poetry programme featuring Yanko Lozanov, Galya Dimitrova and performers from the Armed Forces Representative Ensemble will begin at 11 a.m. on the ceremonial approach to the Monument to Freedom. The official wreath- and flower-laying ceremony will begin at noon, followed by a re-enactment of the Shipka battles by the Traditsiya National Society.
The Gabrovo Regional Administration is again providing free bus transport to Shipka Peak this year. Buses will leave Vazrazhdane Square in Gabrovo at 09 a.m., with the return service scheduled for 3 p.m.
Transit traffic through the Shipka Pass will be restricted between 09 a.m. and 3 p.m. because of the commemoration and diverted through the Pass of the Republic. Visitors will be able to reach the area below the Monument to Freedom by car or bus. Once the available parking spaces are full, vehicles will be directed to park along the right-hand side of the road in the direction of travel.
Admission to the Monument to Freedom will be free on Saturday and its opening hours will be extended. The monument will open to visitors after the commemorative events and remain open until 7 p.m., or until 8 p.m. if there are still visitors waiting to enter.
Conservation and restoration work on the Monument to Freedom is due to begin in early September, several days after the commemoration.
