Balgarianovinite.com Record-high inbound car traffic from Turkiye has been registered at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint, Border Police Inspector Ilian Georchev told journalists on Saturday. More than 5,300 cars entered Bulgaria from its southeastern neighbour over the past 24 hours, setting a record, he said.
Waiting time from the neighbouring Turkish checkpoint of Kapikule is around 30 to 40 minutes, while the border check itself takes one to two minutes, Georchev said. He added that all necessary arrangements have been made to speed up processing, with all inbound lanes for cars operating at full capacity.
Border Police officers from other regional directorates have also been temporarily deployed to assist with checks. Additional officers have been assigned to direct traffic according to passenger category, separating travellers from the European Union from those from third countries.
Georchev attributed the heavy traffic to the mass return of people of Turkish origin working in Western Europe following their traditional summer holidays. The increased traffic is expected to continue until September 10 and to return to normal afterwards, he said.
Asked about ongoing renovation works at the checkpoint, Georchev said they are confined entirely to the lanes used by heavy goods vehicles and are therefore not causing difficulties for car traffic.
Since the beginning of the year, seven cases have been detected involving a total of 24 people concealed in vehicles while attempting to enter Bulgaria illegally. Over the past month, there has been only one case of an attempted border crossing using fraudulent documents.
