The empty chair is no longer a metaphor. It is [Prime Minister]v Rumen Radev’s foreign policy,” Yes, Bulgaria co-leader and Democratic Bulgaria MP Ivaylo Mirchev wrote on Facebook on Saturday.
Mirchev noted that the leaders of the Coalition of the Willing will meet again on August 24 to discuss Ukraine. The meeting will be led by Emmanuel Macron, Friedrich Merz and Andy Burnham, with Volodymyr Zelenskyy participating, while Bulgaria will not be represented, he said.
“Under Radev, Bulgaria has been removed from one of the key formats in which European security is discussed. This has already become a consistent policy of the Radev government,” Mirchev added.
According to him, isolation is not sovereignty and an “empty chair” does not amount to an independent foreign policy.
“When you are absent from discussions on European security and future guarantees for Ukraine, you leave others to make the decisions without you. Before Radev, Bulgaria was at the table. Under Radev, Bulgaria chose to leave it,” the MP said.
Prime Minister Rumen Radev said last month in Paris that “Bulgaria’s place is not in the Coalition of the Willing”.
“We’re not part of a coalition pushing for continued financial and military aid to Ukraine. We don’t provide aid of that kind, because I believe the way to resolve this conflict is through a strong diplomatic effort to end the escalation rather than by prolonging it by military means,” Radev said at the time.
