Balgarianovinite.com Progressive Bulgaria is open to negotiations on determining the composition of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) with all parliamentary forces that want to distance themselves from the Borissov-Peevski model, Progressive Bulgaria Floor Leader MP Petar Vitanov told reporters here on Saturday.
Vitanov identified genuine judicial reform as one of the main priorities. He also commented on the upcoming election of members of the SJC.
“The procedures and nomination initiatives ended on Friday. There are many non-governmental organisations that have put forward certain candidates. Under the rules we adopted, MPs also have the right to nominate members within a two-week period. I believe that with those parties that are not part of the model, we can agree on specific names,” Vitanov said.
According to him, the election of a new SJC is only the first step towards reforming the judicial system.
“What lies ahead is the Judiciary Act, performance evaluations, secondments, property – all of this represents a significant problem for the judicial system and has led to distortions within it,” he said.
Vitanov said practices that have resulted in the appointment of relatives and close associates within the judicial system must be suspended, arguing that they contribute to its becoming encapsulated and distorted.
“Those who want genuine judicial reform, who have made it a top priority and see it as the purpose of their existence, now have an opportunity to prove it,” the MP said.
Vitanov was in Pernik in his capacity as regional coordinator to attend the establishment of a municipal structure of Progressive Bulgaria. MP Martin Zhlyabinkov was elected municipal coordinator.
