Balgarianovinite.com An official ceremony marked the 149th anniversary of the Battle of Shipka.
Among the official guests at the commemoration, organized by the Gabrovo Regional Administration, were President Iliana Iotova and Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov. Also in attendance were Gabrovo Regional Governor Kristina Sidorova, Stara Zagora Regional Governor Kaloyan Damyanov, Deputy Minister of Culture Plamen Slavov, Commander of the Bulgarian Land Forces Major General Deyan Deshkov, Commander of the 61st Stryama Mechanized Brigade Brigadier General Atanas Georgiev, Gabrovo Mayor Tanya Hristova, representatives of national and local institutions, and mayors of municipalities and settlements.
The head of state reviewed the honor guard, after which Metropolitan Kiprian of Stara Zagora celebrated a memorial service for those who died for the liberation of Bulgaria.
“Holy Scripture tells us that no one has greater love than to lay down his life for his friends. These words find their historical and spiritual testimony precisely here—in the self-sacrifice of the heroes of Shipka,” the bishop said.
In her address, President Iliana Iotova described Shipka as a symbol of self-sacrifice, dignity, and unity for all Bulgarians.
“Every time, words fail us. We search for them and find the strongest ones within ourselves to express this pure emotion that brings us here every year at the end of August, filled with pride and a sense of dignity,” she said.
According to the president, the most important message left by the heroes of Shipka is unity.
“And the most important part of this legacy is unity. It is the strongest force. The unity of all Bulgarians,” Iotova said, adding, “because freedom can only be preserved when we are all together.”
The president said that today Shipka represents “a duty of the living,” and that those who hold positions of responsibility in the state must understand the price of freedom and bear their responsibility toward the state and the people.
At the end of the ceremony, the official guests and citizens laid wreaths and flowers at the Monument of Freedom as a sign of gratitude for the self-sacrifice of the heroes who gave their lives for Bulgaria’s liberation.
The commemoration concluded with a historical reenactment of the Shipka Epic, featuring more than 300 participants from 40 clubs of the National Association Tradition. The programme also included a musical and poetry performance. In the parking area at the foot of the Freedom Monument, visitors could view examples of military equipment and a camp set up by the National Association Tradition, featuring a military command tent, uniforms, and weapons, as well as a photo zone for visitors.
