Balgarianovinite.com The European Union (EU), through its Civil Protection Mechanism, is sending emergency assistance to Serbia to help fight forest fires, Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Andreas von Beckerath said on the X platform on Saturday.
Serbia requested assistance from the EU Civil Protection Mechanism on Friday after battling a forest fire for several weeks in the Deliblato (Banat) Sands nature reserve in the northeastern part of the country, about 80 km from Belgrade. Forest fires are also raging in other parts of Serbia.
N1 television reported that the situation is most critical in the nature reserve, where about 400 firefighters have been deployed. Earlier this week, a Russian Il-76 aircraft from the Ministry of Emergency Situations also arrived to assist local firefighters in their efforts.
EU Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib said on X that the EU is sending four helicopters and two firefighting teams to Serbia.
Four helicopters from Czechia, Romania and Slovakia, along with firefighters from Germany and Romania, will be deployed to Serbia through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, Lahbib said on X.
The helicopters from Romania and Slovakia have already arrived and will begin their missions. The Czech Fire and Rescue Service said on Instagram that two helicopters had been deployed, N1 television reported.
Head of Serbia’s Emergency Situations Department Luka Causic said that, in addition to the helicopters, 55 firefighters and 24 fire engines from Germany and 69 firefighters with 15 vehicles from Romania will arrive, Reuters reported.
Serbia is not a member of the European Union, but as a candidate country it has access to the Civil Protection Mechanism, the agency noted.
Causic said that the situation in the country was more stable today, but strong winds are forecast. According to him, protecting people’s lives and property is the priority. On Tuesday, eight municipalities in Western Bulgaria reported smoke, which likely originated from wildfires in Serbia and Albania. Sofia, Kostinbrod, Tran, Dragoman, Bozhurishte, Godech, Slivnitsa, and Kyustendil advised their residents to stay indoors, close doors and windows, and follow the official announcements of the local authorities. According to the Interior Ministry’s Directorate General for Fire Safety and Civil Protection, the most likely source of the smoke were fires in Serbia, including in the Belgrade area, as well as fires in Albania.
