Balgarianovinite.com Extreme temperatures in Edirne and water being retained in reservoirs in Bulgaria have caused sections of the Tundzha River to dry up in the southern part of the city, where the Tundzha joins the Maritsa River, the Turkish Demiroren News Agency reported.
According to data from the Edirne Provincial Directorate of Water Management, the flow of the Tundzha, which springs in Bulgaria, has fallen to 4 cubic metres per second in recent days, down from 20 cubic metres per second in June.
Many sections along the river have dried up, with sandbars forming in the riverbed. Piles of rubbish previously discarded in the river have also become visible.
The waters of the Tundzha in the Edirne area, together with those of the Maritsa, are used extensively to irrigate large rice plantations. Edirne is Turkiye’s main rice-producing region, making the crops directly dependent on the flow of the rivers.
Farmers have expressed concern that the water shortage could threaten the rice harvest if it persists.
Meanwhile, the heatwave that has gripped Istanbul for several days reached its peak Saturday. Around noon, air temperatures reached approximately 36 C, NTV television reported, citing data from the weather service.
The hot weather has also caused humidity levels to rise, making temperatures feel higher.
Humidity reached around 60% around noon and is expected to rise to 80-90% towards the evening.
According to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Disaster Coordination Centre, the megacity is being affected by heatwaves coming both from Africa and the Persian Gulf region.
Hot and humid weather is also expected in Istanbul on Sunday.
