Balgarianovinite.com The Buzludzha Memorial House, Bulgaria’s largest ideological monument and one of Europe’s most iconic abandoned landmarks, was inaugurated on August 23, 1981, as part of celebrations marking the 1300th anniversary of the Bulgarian state. Built over seven and a half years at the initiative of the Bulgarian Communist Party, the vast Brutalist complex involved more than 6,000 workers and cost 25 million leva, much of it raised through compulsory “voluntary” contributions from citizens.
Designed by architect Georgi Stoilov, the saucer-shaped building and its 70-metre tower were intended as a monumental celebration of communism. Its interior featured more than 2 million pieces of mosaic depicting communist leaders, historical figures and events, while enormous red stars illuminated the tower.
The memorial operated as a political museum and venue for Communist Party ceremonies and meetings for only eight years. It closed in 1989 and was nationalized in 1992. After being left unguarded, it was heavily vandalized and stripped of valuable materials, while the dome partially collapsed, exposing the mosaics to the elements.
Despite its ruinous condition, Buzludzha has become a major attraction for urban explorers and tourists, drawing around 50,000 visitors a year. In 2015, architect Dora Ivanova established the Buzludzha Project Foundation to preserve and find a new use for the monument. The foundation has since worked with international experts on conservation, organized cultural events and secured funding for preservation. In 2018, Buzludzha was listed among Europe’s seven most endangered heritage sites, while in 2021 it was designated a modern-era immovable cultural property of national importance.
In July 2025, the foundation helped secure BGN 6.93 million in EU funding for a three-year project to install a permanent insulated roof and replace the exterior windows, with the aim of protecting the surviving artwork and eventually opening parts of the building to visitors.
The future of Buzludzha remains controversial. Supporters argue that preserving it allows Bulgaria to confront and understand its difficult past, while critics oppose spending public money on what they regard as a symbol of communist propaganda and totalitarianism. Bulgarian Socialists continue to hold annual rallies at the site.
Nevertheless, the sixth edition of the Open Buzludzha Festival opened earlier this month at Bulgaria’s Buzludzha Monument, featuring music performances, artistic workshops, digital experiences and DJ sets continuing until sunrise. The festival, organized by the Project Buzludzha Foundation, ran under the motto “Feel the Future.” The programme included a new 3D mapping show, “Concrete Dreams,” created by MP Studios. The projection transformed the monument’s concrete facade into a stage combining reality and dream, with music and DJ sets continuing after midnight.
Buzludzha’s anniversary also recalls its highly ideological inauguration in 1981, attended by more than 35,000 people and led by Communist Party leader Todor Zhivkov. In his speech, Zhivkov described the monument as a tribute to the founders of Bulgaria’s Marxist movement. BTA’s contemporary report hailed the structure as an “apotheosis” of the Communist Party and declared that it would stand forever on the Balkan slopes. BTA’s English Service longtime staffer Lyubomir Gigov has contributed to this story.
