Bulgaria to Build Levee Along Danube Near Kozloduy NPP 2026

Balgarianovinite.com A levee will be built on the Danube near the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), Energy Minister Iva Petrova said in a television interview on Monday.
The structure is expected to be between 250 and 300 metres long, with its exact length to be determined during the design process, Petrova said. Construction is expected to take between 10 and 15 days.
Design work is under way on the selected option, although alternatives are still being assessed, including transferring water from internal reservoirs to the plant. Preliminary studies of the options have been completed, Petrova said.
A slight rise in the Danube on Monday allowed the plant to keep Unit 5 operating at its reduced output of 91.4% of capacity, Petrova said.
“The situation remains dynamic and difficult because the Danube is at critically low levels,” Petrova said.
The plant had never operated under similar conditions, but its teams were managing the situation, she added. The pumps and hydraulic facilities at the site were being maintained.
“We have not delayed taking action. Inter-institutional coordination has been in place for several weeks,” Petrova said.
“Bulgaria consumes around 90,000 megawatt-hours of electricity a day, produces about 130,000 and exports some 31,000,” Petrova said.
On Friday, Unit 5’s output was reduced by about 120 MW from its installed capacity of just over 1,000 MW. It was the first time in the plant’s 52-year history that output had been reduced because of extreme weather and hydrological conditions.
