Balgarianovinite.com Bolhrad marked the 205th anniversary of its founding with a meeting devoted to the history and notable alumni of the Georgi Sava Rakovski Bolhrad High School, the Centre for Culture and Leisure in Bolhrad said in a Facebook post on Friday. The event was organized by the Bolhrad Historical and Ethnographic Museum.
The organizers said such meetings help preserve the memory of earlier generations and pass it on to young people. Together with museum staff, participants recalled different periods in Bolhrad’s history and the lives of some of its residents.
Alumni featured at the meeting included Georgi Yankov, Aleksandar Malinov, Georgi Agura, Dimitar Agura, Aleksandar Teodorov-Balan and Ivan Kolev. At the end of the meeting, Viktoria Bachurska read a poem about Bolhrad written by local resident M. Grekov.
After the Crimean War, Bolhrad and around 40 Bulgarian colonies were transferred from the Russian Empire to the Principality of Moldavia. In January 1858, a delegation representing the colonies petitioned Prince Nicolae Vogoride to establish a public school in Bolhrad. The Bessarabian Bulgarians were assisted by Georgi Rakovski, who was in Iasi at the time.
On June 10, 1858, Vogoride issued a charter establishing the Central Public School in Bolhrad and setting out its status, funding and administration. The school was open to all colonists regardless of their financial circumstances, with instruction provided in Bulgarian and Romanian.
The school was financed from revenue provided by Bolhrad Municipality and another 39 municipalities. It was administered by a three-member board of trustees elected for a three-year term by delegates from the Bulgarian colonies.
The school was restored as a Bulgarian educational institution in 1993 and received its current name in 1999.
