Balgarianovinite.com International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry expressed full support for Bulgarian Olympic Committee (BOC) President Vessela Lecheva and the BOC Executive Bureau at a meeting in Lausanne, the BOC press centre said on Monday.
Coventry welcomed Lecheva and the BOC delegation at the Olympic House for their first official meeting. She said the new BOC leadership was already demonstrating a different approach to management, characterized by openness and ambition for development.
Lecheva said that “the difficulties are behind us” and that the BOC wanted to show the positive face of Bulgarian sport to the IOC and the world. She also presented plans for a new BOC headquarters and said it would be an honour to invite Coventry to its opening if the plans succeed.
The Bulgarian delegation included BOC Executive Bureau Vice President and National Sports Academy Rector Prof. Krasimir Petkov, snowboard World Cup winner and four-time Olympian Radoslav Yankov, BOC Secretary General Danail Dimov, Prof. Efrem Efremov and Communications Director Milyana Veleva.
Yankov, who is also the athletes’ representative, thanked Coventry for her support for athletes and stressed the importance of retaining parallel giant slalom in the Olympic programme. Coventry welcomed the participation of athletes in the governance of the Olympic movement.
IOC National Olympic Committees Relations Director James Macleod said the IOC administration and Executive Board had closely followed the situation concerning the BOC. He said the IOC’s priorities were neutrality, compliance with the rules and, above all, respect for election results, adding that these principles had guided its support for the elected BOC leadership.
The IOC Communications Department also praised the visible changes in the BOC’s public profile, including its new website, open media policy, social media activity and greater transparency.
Coventry said she plans to hold active meetings with National Olympic Committees in 2027 and that Bulgaria could be included in her programme of visits.
