Balgarianovinite.com Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev has called against speculating about Bulgaria’s participation in the “coalition of the willing” for Ukraine. The coalition was meeting in Ukraine on Monday as the country was celebrating the 35th anniversary of its independence from the Soviet Union.
Taking a question about Bulgaria and the coalition during a press conference in Sofia, Radev said: “There is no need to speculate.” He noted that Bulgaria’s ambassador was attending anniversary events in Kyiv.
“You saw how many leaders are in Ukraine. I think you can count them on the fingers of both hands. This is not the whole of the European Union,” the prime minister said.
Radev also commented on the Freya initiative, which was presented in Paris last month. According to him, only nine EU member states and the United Kingdom have joined this anti-ballistic missile defense project so far. “There isn’t a single Eastern European country, not even Poland,” the Bulgarian prime minister said.
He said the initiative requires “substantial financial resources” and “significant technological development”, while its parameters remain “extremely unclear”. Radev said that when a decision on the initiative is reached, it should be taken where it belongs – at the Council of the European Union. “I think that is the normal way to proceed,” he said, adding that lasting initiatives are adopted precisely through the formats of the EU and NATO.
The prime minister recalled that Bulgaria is a member of both the EU and NATO, and pointed to the country’s participation in the Black Sea Mine Countermeasures Naval Group alongside Romania and Turkiye. According to him, this is “entirely in the interests of freedom of navigation and the safety of shipping in the Black Sea”, which has a direct bearing on the Bulgarian economy.
