Balgarianovinite.com Teams of the Social Assistance agency will begin visiting properties affected by the heavy rains in the municipalities of Batak and Peshtera from Tuesday, the Labour Ministry said. The teams will assess the flood damage and inform the owners of the affected homes about social assistance available to them.
People whose property has been damaged can apply for a one-time payment of up to three times the poverty line, at EUR 1,171. If the damaged home is the family’s only residence, additional support of EUR 1,550 may also be granted.
On Monday night, teams visited the flooded properties together with the municipal crisis management teams and offered shelter to those affected. The affected families chose to stay with friends and relatives.
Search is still underway for a 58-year-old man from Peshtera, who went missing during the flooding caused by Monday’s torrential rains, according to a spokesperson for the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior in Pazardzhik. Several houses in the Lukovitsa neighborhood of Peshtera and in the village of Nova Mahala in the Batak area were flooded after Monday’s torrential rain, and for several hours, police searched for the missing 58-year-old using a drone and search dogs. The Peshtera–Batak road remains closed, and drivers can use an alternative route via Varvara–Kostandovo Station–Rakitovo–Batak.
Due to the downpour, the Stara Reka River burst its banks and flooded the ground floors of homes in settlements in the municipality of Batak, the town of Peshtera, and the village of Isperihovo in the municipality of Bratsigovo. A state of disaster was also declared in the municipalities of Strumyani and Satovcha. So far, there are no reports of people in distress.
Teams of the Social Assistance agency are in constant communication with regional and municipal authorities across the country and stand ready to respond and provide support to those affected if necessary.
