Balgarianovinite.com Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Vazrazhdane leader Kostadin Kostadinov said he would advise Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov to focus on his post’s “primary function of developing policies that ensure national security.” Earlier in the day, the Minister commented that Iran had carried out a very successful hybrid operation, aided by Bulgarian politicians.
“It has become clear that we effectively have a dysfunctional army, and that the F-16 fighter jets – which are already significantly delayed – will not be delivered to us [by the US]. That Bulgaria lacks its own sovereign political stance that would allow it to say ‘no’ in cases that are not convenient for it and our national interests. Bulgarian governments, as always, serve foreign national interests,” Kostadinov commented.
“The US came when they wanted to, and left when they wanted to. The Bulgarian government’s position was of absolutely no consequence,” he added. He was referring to the Parliament-authorized deployment of US tanker aircraft at Bulgaria’s Bezmer Air Base from July 24 through October 1, 2026, followed by the two military aircraft leaving on August 21.
“We saw [Prime Minister] Radev squirm; we saw his extremely inappropriate, spineless behaviour,” Kostadinov added. According to him, those in power have put national security at serious risk. “The threat has not passed yet because the war in Iran is not over, and if the Americans want to land tomorrow, they will land and will not even ask the Bulgarian government,” he said.
In his words, the Cabinet is not the one in charge – it is controlled by Brussels and Washington.
He added that he would not be surprised if “the failed government” of Rumen Radev began organizing anti-opposition protests.
