Balgarianovinite.com In a message to the Ukrainian city of Bolhrad on the occasion of the 205th anniversary of its founding, Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova called it “a place of rich history and the spiritual home of one of the largest historic Bulgarian communities outside Bulgaria”.
The message to the residents and guests of the city was read by Bulgaria’s Consul General in Odesa, Svetoslav Ivanov.
It also said that Bolhrad is “a symbol of the unbroken connection between generations and vivid testimony to the strength of the Bulgarian spirit”. For more than two centuries, the Bulgarian language, traditions, culture and national identity have been preserved there and passed down from generation to generation with love and responsibility, she added.
The President expressed her deep appreciation to the Bessarabian Bulgarians who have devotedly preserved their Bulgarian identity and historical memory and strengthened Bolhrad’s role as an important educational and cultural centre of the Bessarabian Bulgarians. “Your devotion to your roots and your efforts to preserve the Bulgarian heritage are highly valued in Bulgaria. I am convinced that our shared history, spiritual closeness and ties between people will continue to provide a solid foundation for the development of relations between the Republic of Bulgaria and Ukraine,” Yotova said, adding that the Bulgarian state would continue to support Bulgarians living abroad and encourage initiatives strengthening their cultural, educational and community activities.
“I wholeheartedly wish all residents of Bolhrad health, peace, prosperity and the strength to continue developing their city while preserving its invaluable historical heritage,” Yotova said in the concluding part of her address. “May the celebration be an occasion for well-deserved pride, unity and confidence in the future.”
