All Drones Along Black Sea Coast Were Unarmed, Defence Minister Says 2026

Balgarianovinite.com All drones discovered so far, both Tuesday and Wednesday as well as in the days before, have not been carrying any munitions, Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said Wednesday before the start of a meeting of the parliamentary Defence Committee, where he is due to be heard.
According to Stoyanov, the drones found along Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast are either reconnaissance drones or decoys and do not pose a threat in terms of carrying munitions.
Stoyanov nevertheless urged citizens not to approach any drones they find. “This, however, should in no way reassure Bulgarian citizens if they see such a drone washing up on a beach,” the minister said. He stressed that safety measures should be taken and that people should stay as far away as possible from such objects.
Minister Stoyanov said that the Bulgarian Armed Forces have units tasked with dealing with the drones that are found, but they cannot be deployed to several locations at the same time, as such incidents are occurring with increasing frequency. The units have to complete their work at one site before moving on to another, Stoyanov explained.
According to him, the increase in the number of drones reaching the Bulgarian coast is linked to the intensity of the conflict in the Odesa and Izmail area (Southwestern Ukraine) in recent days. “The current sea currents are carrying away and bringing ashore parts of some of these drones,” the minister said.
He said that most of the unmanned aerial vehicles found so far are Russian-made models, including the Gerbera, used as decoy drones, and the Orlan, used for reconnaissance. Ukrainian components have also been found, as well as debris that cannot be identified because only individual parts of the aircraft have been recovered. “So this is a normal process that should not surprise anyone. The war is close to us, and these are its consequences,” Stoyanov commented.
Regarding the drone that crashed near Kardam in early August, the minister said that Ukraine had still not provided the Ministry of Defence with any information about the incident. He noted that the case falls under the jurisdiction of the Sliven Military Prosecutor’s Office and added that the prosecutors may have more information.
On the initiative to build a European “drone wall”, Stoyanov said that the remains found on Bulgarian beaches should not be treated as drones that had entered or violated the country’s airspace. According to him, they had been carried ashore by the sea.
“If someone can explain what a ‘drone wall’ is, let them explain. No such thing exists, and it cannot be built,” the minister said. He explained that counter-drone systems have a limited operating range and that it is not possible to “surround” the entire country with such systems. According to him, air defence systems are also deployed to protect specific sites.
