Balgarianovinite.com Exhibitions showcasing works by Ivan Milev, contemporary Bulgarian artists, posters dedicated to jazz, as well as projects by graduates of the National Academy of Art and the Krastyo Sarafov National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts opened Thursday evening as part of the 42nd Apollonia Festival of Arts in Sozopol. This year’s programme features more than 70 events, including over 20 literary evenings, 25 concerts, theatre performances, film screenings and exhibitions.
The Sozopol Art Gallery hosts Ivan Milev. Like a Seagull and The Islands Within Us, presented by the Kazanlak Art Gallery. Plamen Petrov, Director of the Kazanlak Art Gallery, described the two exhibitions as distinct stories that nevertheless share a “common diagnosis”. He said the exhibition dedicated to Ivan Milev presents the artist “stripped to the bone”, beyond his familiar public image, and explores the links between his art, personal fate and experiences during World War I. The exhibition The Islands Within Us turns its attention to contemporary artists and their attempts to create inner spaces where they can distance themselves from social clichés, Petrov said.
The opening also featured an exhibition from the International Triennial of Stage Poster, dedicated to jazz. Prof. Bozhidar Yonov, organizer of the International Triennial of Stage Poster, said that this year’s visual art and everything associated with it was of a very high standard.
Albena Spasova, curator of the exhibition, said it features posters by 39 contemporary artists from around the world, representing different generations. Some of the works were exhibited at the first International Triennial in 1995, while others were specially contributed for the current exhibition.
An exhibition by graduates of the National Academy of Art opened at the Dukova House, while students from the Scenography Department of the Krastyo Sarafov National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts showed their work at the Otets Paisiy Community Centre.
The opening featured the exhibition Change the Picture, which focuses on environmental protection. Diana Yakova of Philip Morris Bulgaria said that this year’s exhibition showcases posters from a competition addressing the problem of cigarette butt litter. She said around 120 entries were received, from which a jury selected approximately 30 posters. They are displayed along the fence of the Sozopol Art Gallery.
The Apollonia Festival of Arts will run until September 6.
Apollonia has been held since 1984. Its stages in Sozopol bring together artists from different fields and audiences from Bulgaria and abroad each year.
BTA is a media partner of the festival and will take part in its The Price of Success series on September 1, presenting the 12 issues of BTA’s LIК magazine published since the previous edition of Apollonia.
