Balgarianovinite.com Bulgaria’s Culture Minister Evtim Miloshev called the Apollonia Festival of Arts “a symbol of the freedom of the human spirit”. He opened its 42nd edition in Sozopol on Thursday night.
“I feel a little strange opening something that has never stopped – the joy of culture, the joy of art, the joy of creativity and of engaging with cultural figures,” Miloshev said. “And what better place than Sozopol at the end of summer to bring us together here for the 42nd time for this interaction, for this personal experience.”
One of the great achievements of the Apollonia Festival of Arts is that young talents stand alongside established cultural figures, leaving a deep and lasting legacy long after the festival ends, Miloshev said.
The Culture Minister said Sozopol is becoming a place for artistic expression, as well as a place for spiritual experience. “As long as this place exists, as long as we gather here, it means that our spirit is free, that there is meaning in our existence, because we are a country that is 14 centuries old and has survived thanks to spirituality, culture, writing and language. This is what has preserved us,” the Culture Minister said.
“Shortly, a person whom I love very much, a symbol of the purest friendship for many years – artist Nina Nikolina – will take the stage. This will be a wonderful beginning to the 2026 Apollonia Arts Festival,” Miloshev said before declaring this year’s event open.
Among those attending were Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) Director General Kiril Valchev, Bulgarian National Radio Director General Milen Mitev and Bulgarian National Television Director General Milena Milotinova.
The Apollonia Festival of Arts will run until September 6.
Apollonia has been held since 1984. Its stages in Sozopol bring together artists from different fields and audiences from Bulgaria and abroad each year. This year’s programme features more than 70 events spanning music, theatre, literature, cinema and visual arts.
BTA is a media partner of the festival and will take part in its The Price of Success series on September 1, presenting the 12 issues of BTA’s LIK magazine published since the previous edition of Apollonia.
