Balgarianovinite.com More than 2.8 million cubic metres of water have been transferred to the Srebarna Reserve, while the state of partial emergency declared for the reserve will be extended by another month due to the continuing low water levels of the Danube River, the Environment and Water Ministry said on Friday.
The persistently low levels of the Danube are affecting the water regime and the condition of the aquatic ecosystem in the Srebarna Nature Reserve. The Ministry of Environment and Water, the Fire Safety and Civil Protection General Directorate, Silistra Municipality and the Silistra Regional Governor are continuing efforts to replenish the lake by mechanically transferring water from the Danube.
More than 2.8 million cubic metres of water have been transferred to the lake since the operation began on July 14.
Due to the continuing adverse hydrological conditions, the state of partial emergency in the part of Silistra Municipality encompassing the Srebarna Reserve will also be extended. The current emergency declaration is in effect until August 29, 2026, while the proposed extension will run until September 29, 2026. The order is issued by the Mayor of Silistra Municipality under the powers granted to him by the Disaster Protection Act. The duration may be adjusted if conditions change.
Field operations are continuing around the clock, the Ministry’s press service added. Water-filled areas where the suction heads of the Fire Safety and Civil Protection General Directorate’s pumping equipment are located are being maintained, while floating boom barriers are being used to prevent algae from reaching the pumps and interfering with their operation.
High temperatures and low Danube water levels are reducing the flow of water into the intermediate canal, from which it is pumped into the lake. This requires a backhoe excavator to operate continuously on site, along with round-the-clock efforts by staff of the Silistra Regional Directorate of Fire Safety and Civil Protection.
As a result of the measures taken, the reserve currently maintains a water level that provides suitable conditions for waterfowl. Large concentrations of greater and Dalmatian pelicans, great and little egrets, swans, ducks and other species have been observed. The birds are active and in good condition. Despite the exceptionally low levels of the Danube, the lake continues to provide suitable conditions for large numbers of protected waterfowl thanks to the timely joint action of the authorities involved.
The Environment and Water Ministry continues to monitor the condition of the reserve and the hydrological situation on a daily basis and, together with the other responsible institutions, will continue taking the necessary measures to maintain the lake’s water regime, the Ministry said.
A state of emergency for the Srebarna Reserve was declared by Silistra Mayor Aleksandar Sabanov on July 14, 2026. At the end of July, the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water in Ruse reported that around 245,000 cubic metres of water had entered the Srebarna wetland in the first week of the operation to transfer water from the Danube. In mid-August, the inspectorate said that the operation to transfer water from the Danube to the lake was continuing, with approximately 1.8 million cubic metres of water having been delivered at that point.
