Balgarianovinite.com Without clear democratic unity on the right, party candidates have no chance in the upcoming presidential election, GERB leader Boyko Borissov told reporters in Pernik (Southwestern Bulgaria), where he was attending the 19th anniversary of the party’s local organisation.
Borissov said that the party is still discussing various options for participating in the election and called for “reason to prevail” so that the right-wing political space can oppose Iliana Iotova’s candidacy.
He said that presidential elections are now different from those five, 10 or 15 years ago. Borissov cited Iotova as an example, saying that she will be nominated by an initiative committee and supported by Progressive Bulgaria. “There are still about 10 days for reason to prevail, so that the entire right can oppose the left,” Borissov said. He added that if this does not happen, “we might as well congratulate Ms Iotova now”.
Borissov said that the decision on whether GERB will nominate its own presidential candidate does not rest with him, but with the party’s Executive Commission. “The party is considering [it], and this is not my decision but that of the Executive Commission. There are still some options for reason to prevail,” he said.
Borissov said that, over time and with age, every party and every person become worn out. He recalled that he had served three times as Prime Minister and as Mayor of Sofia, and said that GERB should be preparing a new generation of politicians.
“GERB will continue to exist without me,” Borissov said.
He said that the party is preparing the next generation, expressing respect for both experienced and new members.
Borissov also commented on the electoral process, expressing distrust in machine voting and the actions of the institutions. He said that, in his view, there are problems with the certification and oversight of the voting machines.
