Balgarianovinite.com Artist Marin Marinov explores seaside motifs in his exhibition “Absurd at the Beach”, which will be unveiled on September 3 at HOSTGALLERY in Sofia, the artist said.
According to Marinov, the eight large-format paintings were created specifically for the gallery space. In the works, he examines the traditionally romanticized motif of the sea and the beach from a contemporary perspective, he said.
“For centuries, the seascape has been present in the works of artists, writers and musicians, accumulating a wide range of symbolic and emotional meanings. In my view, its continuous reproduction has led to the banalization of the subject and its transformation into an easily recognizable and decorative image. Depicting moments such as sunrise and sunset, natural phenomena such as storms, or the relaxed body on the beach fits into an established notion of beauty and reinforces certain visual expectations without raising new questions,” Marinov said.
He explained that he created the series as a counterpoint to this idealized and spiritualized perception of the sea.
“Rather than presenting the beach as a space for poetic contemplation, I portray it as a place of play, freedom, entertainment and experience. In my paintings, the idea of sublime inspiration drawn from the sea gives way to the possibilities of movement and human interaction,” he said.
In the paintings “Beach Tennis,” “Playing with an Inflatable Toy,” “Hide and Seek” and “Three Floating Heads,” games of tennis, inflatable toys and hide-and-seek displace the seriousness and drama traditionally associated with images of the sea.
According to Marinov, the absurdity in the series stems from disrupting the expected logic of the motif and from the clash between the culturally loaded image of the sea and immediate human behaviour.
He also incorporates imagery associated with classical antiquity, although, as he puts it, these elements appear blurred and unstable, forming part of an encounter between the old and the contemporary. This can be seen in the works “Ancient Stories,” “Sculptural Bust with Ball” and “Olymp”.
