Balgarianovinite.com Public transportation on bus and rail lines in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Bursa are free of charge on Sunday, August 30, as Turkiye celebrates Victory Day, a national public holiday. According to a notice published in Turkiye’s Official Gazette, passengers will be able to travel free of charge throughout the day on Istanbul’s Marmaray line, which runs beneath the Bosphorus, as well as on Baskentray in Ankara, İZBAN in Izmir and Bursaray in Bursa.
Travel is also free on Istanbul’s Sirkeci-Kazlicesme and Gayrettepe-Istanbul Airport-Halkali rail lines.
Bus services in the four major cities are likewise free of charge.
Victory Day, celebrated across Turkiye’s population of approximately 86 million, has been observed as an official public holiday since 1924.
On August 30, 1922, 104 years ago, the Turkish army under the command of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk won a decisive victory over Greek forces at Dumlupinar during the 1919–1922 Greco-Turkish War, known in Turkiye as the War of National Liberation. The victory at Dumlupinar led to the withdrawal of Greek forces from Asia Minor and paved the way for the establishment of the modern Republic of Turkiye. August 30 is therefore also celebrated as a major commemorative day for the Turkish armed forces.
Victory Day is marked every year with a wide range of events and ceremonies across the country.
As part of the traditional commemorations, state and government leaders, headed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, are scheduled to visit Anitkabir, the mausoleum of Ataturk in Ankara, where they will lay a wreath and pay tribute to the founder of the Turkish Republic.
For Victory Day, the Turkish Air Force’s SOLOTURK aerobatic team will stage a special air show over Istanbul. The lights on the bridges spanning the Bosphorus will be illuminated in red, the main colour of the Turkish flag.
Military parades are scheduled to take place in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir, along with wreath-laying ceremonies at Ataturk monuments in cities across the country. The celebrations will also feature numerous entertainment events, including concerts by military brass bands.
In the Aegean port city of Izmir, ships belonging to the Turkish Navy and coast guard are open to visitors.
