Balgarianovinite.com A passenger ferry travelling to Turkiye capsized off Cyprus on Sunday, Turkish media and the online edition of the Cyprus Mail said. The Associated Press reported, citing Turkish media, that at least seven people were killed and more than 172 rescued.
Reports initially differed on the number of people aboard the catamaran. Turkish media put the figure at 279, while Turkish Cypriot Public Works and Transport Minister Erhan Arikli said there were 267 people on board, including 259 passengers and eight crew members.
Unal Ustel, Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), which is recognized only by Turkiye, told Turkish state broadcaster TRT that more than 172 people had been rescued.
Turkiye’s Ambassador to Nicosia Ali Murat Bascerri told TRT that there had been fatalities but did not specify their number. He said many of the 259 passengers and eight crew members had been rescued, while some had been taken to hospital.
The catamaran was travelling from Kyrenia, also known as Girne, in the breakaway north of ethnically divided Cyprus, to the Turkish port of Tasucu in Mersin Province.
Video from the scene showed people wearing life jackets floating in the water around the capsized vessel, AP reported.
According to Turkish outlet Haberler, the ferry began taking on water about 2-2.5 km off the coast near Girne. The captain turned the vessel back towards the port but was unable to reach it before it capsized.
Search-and-rescue operations are continuing, while hospitals and emergency services in the area are placed on alert. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
Turkish media reported that the ferry is operated by Turkish shipping company Filo Denizcilik.
