Balgarianovinite.com A record number of vehicles and passengers leaving Türkiye over the past three years was recorded at the Kapıkule-Kapitan Andreevo border crossing on the Turkish-Bulgarian border, Turkish news agency DHA reported on Sunday, citing Edirne Governor Yunus Sezer. More than 5,500 vehicles and passengers passed through the crossing when leaving Türkiye on August 27.
“Since the start of the season of mass travel by Turkish citizens working in European countries – the so-called guest workers – on June 22, 3.7 million passengers and 1 million vehicles entering and leaving the country have passed through the four border crossings near Edirne – Kapıkule and Hamzabeyli on the Turkish-Bulgarian border, and Ipsala and Pazarkule on the border with Greece,” he said.
Sezer said that 60,000 Turkish citizens working abroad are expected to leave the country over the next 10 days. “Yesterday, we broke the record for the past three years at the Kapıkule border crossing, with 5,587 vehicles leaving the country. This level of traffic is continuing to a relatively similar extent today,” the governor said.
According to him, last year the average waiting time to cross the border at the crossings with Greece and Bulgaria was around 39 minutes. This year, it has fallen below 30 minutes, with the average waiting time standing at around 27 minutes. On peak days, however, when Turkish citizens working abroad were returning from Türkiye, waiting times reached up to two hours.
The border crossings near Edirne to Bulgaria and Greece are currently staffed by 1,471 employees operating around the clock, DHA reported. An additional 137 customs officers and around 90 passport control officers have been deployed and will remain until the end of the peak travel season, DHA added.
