Balgarianovinite.com The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) has confirmed two outbreaks of sheep and goat pox: one in Logodazh, in the southwestern Blagoevgrad Region, and the other in Dzhinot, in the southeastern Yambol Region, the BFSA press office said on Monday.
In Blagoevgrad Region, a primary outbreak has been registered at two epidemiologically linked livestock holdings, where a total of 202 animals are kept. The owner reported a suspected case of the disease.
A five-kilometre protection zone has been established around the outbreak, covering the villages of Drenkovo, Zelendol, Klisura, Logodazh and Obel in Blagoevgrad Municipality, Blagoevgrad Region. A 20-kilometre surveillance zone has also been established around the outbreak.
In Yambol Region, a primary outbreak has been registered at a livestock holding with 135 sheep and their offspring. The owner reported a suspected case of the disease.
A five-kilometre protection zone has been established around the outbreak, covering the villages of Vodenichane, Dzhinot, Irechekovo and Charda in Straldzha Municipality, Yambol Region, and the villages of Tarnava and Chargan in Tundzha Municipality, Yambol Region. A 20-kilometre surveillance zone has also been established around the outbreak.
The owners of the livestock holdings are fully cooperating with the veterinary authorities in implementing the measures taken to control and eradicate the disease, in accordance with European and national legislation.
Restrictive measures are being introduced in the settlements within the designated protection and surveillance zones, including a ban on the movement of sheep and goats, except for animals intended for immediate slaughter under specified conditions. The animals must be kept indoors, while livestock holdings in both zones will be subject to animal counts and updates to the data in the VetIS Integrated Information System, as well as official veterinary controls.
Special requirements apply to the movement and processing of raw milk from the affected areas, in accordance with current legislation.
The disease poses no danger to humans, but its spread can cause significant economic losses.
The BFSA urges farmers to remain highly vigilant and strictly observe biosecurity measures. It says regular monitoring of animals is essential for the early detection of the disease. If sheep and goat pox is suspected, a veterinarian should be notified immediately. Prompt reporting is crucial to limiting the spread of the disease. Reports can be made around the clock via the agency’s hotline: 0 700 122 99.
