Balgarianovinite.com Bulgarian MP Angel Georgiev of Vazrazhdane said on Monday that he attended the latest hearing in the case against Iva Mihaylova in Kocani to support the young woman, while criticizing the actions of the local prosecution.
“What we are seeing, particularly on the part of the prosecution, is a certain bias,” Georgiev said. He claimed that at times the prosecutor had tried to dictate the course of the proceedings and assume the court’s functions.
“He is not a judge, but he is trying to assume the judge’s functions,” the Bulgarian MP said.
Georgiev said it was particularly concerning that, in his view, Mihaylova had repeatedly been prevented from travelling to Bulgaria for medical treatment without clear reasons being given.
“We believe that this is, to put it mildly, a human rights violation,” he said.
According to the MP, such treatment is inconsistent with North Macedonia’s aspirations to join the European Union and its claims of having a properly functioning judicial system.
The case against Iva Mihaylova, who is a citizen of both Bulgaria and North Macedonia, concerns her involvement in a traffic accident in which one person was killed. Mihaylova has been charged with a serious offence related to road traffic safety in North Macedonia. The accident occurred in early October 2025, leaving several people, including Mihaylova, injured. Her identity documents were confiscated following the accident, preventing her from receiving treatment in Bulgaria, one of the countries where such treatment is possible given the nature of her spinal injuries.
MPs from the parliamentary groups of Progressive Bulgaria, GERB, Democratic Bulgaria and Vazrazhdane, representatives of the Bulgarian Embassy in Skopje, lawyers from the law firm of Nikolay Dimitrov, who specializes in insurance, contract and tort law, as well as other Bulgarian lawyers, are attending the hearing at the Kocani court.
A large number of relatives and friends of the person killed and those injured in the accident, the experts who prepared the three expert reports on the incident, as well as Bulgarian and local media, are also present in the courtroom.
