Balgarianovinite.com With the candidacy of Andrey Gurov and Georgi Kandev in the upcoming presidential election, Bulgarians will have an alternative to what Iliana Iotova is offering — a third term for Rumen Radev, Nadejda Iordanova, chair of the Democratic Bulgaria (DB) parliamentary group, said in Varna.
Both Gurov and Kandev demonstrated during their time in the caretaker government that the country can be governed with integrity, Iordanova said. She explained that following Tuesday, when the two are expected to announce their decision to run in the election, the coalition’s National Council will be convened, as it has the authority to decide whether to endorse their candidacy.
According to Iordanova, the Gurov–Kandev ticket will give Bulgarians the opportunity to vote against the concentration of power and in favor of a strong pro-European president.
She added that Boyko Borissov is deliberately working against Gurov’s potential candidacy, even before it has been officially announced whether he will run. In her view, this behavior ultimately benefits Iliana Iotova.
“Presidential elections are such that candidates need to speak directly to citizens. There can be no successful Bulgarian president through party maneuvering and negotiations between party headquarters,” Iordanova said.
She added that it would be better if political parties stepped back somewhat, put aside their political egos and allowed the presidential candidates to speak directly with Bulgarian citizens.
“It will depend on Gurov and Kandev’s team how they approach this campaign. Our task is to address them with respect and understanding for the enormous responsibility they now carry. In this complex situation, both in Bulgaria and around the world, when we see a government that is putting the country’s national interests in geopolitical uncertainty, we need to ensure institutional checks and balances rather than concentrating all power in a single circle,” Iordanova said.
“Starting today, Yes, Bulgaria is launching a series of regional assemblies across the country as part of its preparations, first for the presidential election and also for next year’s local elections,” Iordanova added.
She said the main goal is to strengthen the Democratic Bulgaria coalition organizationally, which, in her view, should offer Bulgarian citizens a more consolidated and stronger, genuine centre-right alternative.
Regarding the local elections, Yordanova said that following a broad survey of the party’s local structures, the party will begin preparing its candidates in the first half of September.
She said internal discussions so far have made it clear that the main objective will be to secure broader participation in local government, including through electoral alliances that can offer an alternative to the incumbent mayors representing the status quo.
