Balgarianovinite.com Over 3,270 students will begin the school year in Taraclia, Moldova, on September 1, said the хead of the Education Department in Taraclia Lilia Sarsaman. Among them are 271 first-graders, 320 ninth-graders and 115 twelfth-graders. The education system consists of 13 schools and two school branches. The new school year will begin with traditional celebrations, including the ringing of the first school bell and greetings to the students, teachers, and parents. After the ceremony students will attend their first lesson, dedicated to Moldova’s independence. The lesson, titled “Independence That Unites Us” (“Independența care ne unește”), was set by the Ministry of Education and Research and is linked to the 35th anniversary of Moldova’s independence. Lilia Sarsaman explained that everything will be traditional, but some changes are expected, one of which is bringing schools under the authority of the Ministry of Education and Research. Curricula for many subjects will be reviewed, with particular emphasis on mathematics, and both the teaching approach and the content will be revised. Multilingual education is also being integrated, focusing on teaching both in the native language and in Romanian.Changes are also being introduced in the assessment in primary education. Grades in core subjects will be reintroduced in fourth grade. The aim is to make the transition from primary to secondary education smoother and assessment criteria more understandable to children. According to Sarsaman, this will provide more information about students’ level of mastery of the school subjects to both secondary school teachers and parents. The head of the Education Department in Taraclia also noted that the decisions in the schools will have greater autonomy in decision-making– seven schools will operate under individual plans approved by their pedagogical councils, the Education Department and the Ministry of Education and Research. More attention will also be paid to student self-governance, which aims to foster democratic values among students.According to 2024 census data, Taraclia District is the only district in Moldova with an ethnic Bulgarian majority, with 64.2% of its residents identifying as Bulgarian.
