Balgarianovinite.com The National Academy of Art (NAA) has opened an exhibition, titled “A Photographic Journey – 130 Years”, in Burgas. The exhibition is located along the walkway in front of the Sea Casino Cultural Centre and will be open to visitors until September 30.
The exhibition marks the 130th anniversary of the National Academy of Art, which in 2026 celebrates 130 years since its establishment in 1896. It features materials from the archives of the National Academy of Art, the State Archives Agency, the Bulgarian Historical Archive at the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library, and the Old Sofia archive.
Among the exhibits are photographs of the first lecturers at the State School of Drawing — Anton Mitov, Boris Schatz and Ivan Mrkvicka. The exhibition also features a photograph of the first building of the State School of Drawing at 22 Aksakov Street in Sofia, taken from the collection of the Central State Archives.
Also on display is a photograph of the pavilion of the State School of Drawing at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Liege in 1905.
“Ten years have passed since we celebrated the academy’s 120th anniversary and opened the “Rectors’ exhibition”, which was held at the Magazia cultural venue at the Port of Burgas. Ten years have passed since the academy established its presence in Burgas,” said Prof. Svetozar Benchev, director of the Burgas branch of the National Academy of Art.
He noted that the exhibition traces the institution’s history through materials from several archives, from the establishment of the State School of Drawing 130 years ago to the National Academy of Art’s presence in Burgas today.
Burgas Deputy Mayor Diana Savateva said that the exhibition “A Photographic Journey – 130 Years” is one of the events hosted by Burgas to mark the 130th anniversary of the National Academy of Art. She also highlighted the importance of the academy’s Burgas branch, which was opened in 2018.
The exhibition was produced as part of the 2026 competition for funding projects related to the National Academy of Art’s core scientific and artistic activities.
The celebrations marking the 130th anniversary of the National Academy of Art are held under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and Science.
