Balgarianovinite.com As former caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov officially announced his presidential bid on Tuesday, with former Interior Ministry Secretary General Georgi Kandev as his running mate, statements of support came from representatives of the opposition Continue the Change (CC) and Democratic Bulgaria (DB). No other party has reacted to the announcement.
Both CC and DB are yet to adopt their official party positions on the Gurov-Kandev bid.
Radan Kanev, a member of the European Parliament who chairs the DB-affiliated party Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria, wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday that Andrey Gurov and Georgi Kandev’s decision to enter the political fray of the presidential election as independent candidates, backed by a campaign committee, is welcome and long-awaited news. Kanev wrote: “I am convinced that Andrey can win the support of many Bulgarians – not just party supporters but all of us who want Bulgaria to be a true democracy, with a fair market economy, a just and prosperous society, and an important part of an ever-stronger and more united Europe. All of us who understand that the centralization of all state power in two hands leads neither to justice, nor to freedom, nor to prosperity. All of us who know that we are strong as part of the free world, and not as provincial opportunists who trade in old and new dependencies.”
Kanev said that his party will make an official decision through its competent collective bodies, the National Executive and the Executive Council, which will convene on September 11.
Yes, Bulgaria, which is another DB partner, said in a statement that it welcomed Andrey Gurov’s decision to run for president with Kandev as vice president. According to this party, the Gurov-Kandev ticket offers a clear pro-European perspective and an opportunity to unite voters who want Bulgaria to develop as a modern European democracy with strong institutions and respect for the rule of law.
The party’s Executive Council will convene a meeting of its National Council and submit the two candidacies for discussion. The National Council will make the final decision on whether to endorse them.
The National Council of Continue the Change will meet on September 12 and make a decision regarding the presidential election, party leader Assen Vassilev said in a Facebook post. “Andrey Gurov will be a great president, a responsible commander-in-chief and a true check on those in power,” Vassilev wrote. He has already expressed his personal support for Gurov’s candidacy.
Democratic Bulgaria floor leader Nadejda Iordanova and Yes, Bulgaria co-leader Ivaylo Mirchev have also expressed support for Gurov and Kandev earlier.
